A global LEI is the reference code (ISO 17442) to identify uniquely legally distinct entities. See for more information on www.gleif.org (in 14 languages of the G20).

GLEIF 

 

is a Swiss foundation, founded by the FSB (Financial Stability Board) on request of the G20 in June 2014. GLEIF has the mandate to develop and maintain the global LEI system and to make the LEI (legal entity identifier and other data of legal entities) a broad public good and free of charge available for the users of the private and public sector. The LEI data of legal entities (and their parent or children) is available on www.gleif.org .

 

GLEIF also has the mandate to make in addition the legal forms of any jurisdiction free of charge available based on the ISO 20275 ELF standard and also delivers mapping services with other identifiers.

 

GLEIF's strategy for the use of the LEI by the private sector is focussed on A: Capital and Money Markets, B: Banking (KYC, Trade Finance, cross-border payments), C. Supply Chain inclusive logistics, D: Digital Economy (certification authorities, blockchain etc).

The LEI data are used:

​

a. by authorities of any jurisdiction or financial sector to, assess systemic risk and maintain financial stability, conduct market surveillance and enforcement, supervise market participants, conduct resolution activities, prepare high quality financial data, and or to undertake other official functions; and

b. by the private sector to support improved risk management, increased operational efficiency, more accurate calculation of exposures, and other needs.
