A representative of UkrSwift participated in the EMEA Swift Alliance meeting held in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The EMEA Swift Alliance is an important platform for coordination among National Swift Member and User Groups across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, including countries that do not have direct representation on the Swift Board due to insufficient Swift traffic volumes. For Ukraine, participation in ESA is a practical channel for contributing to the development of the international Swift cooperative and for bringing the position of the Ukrainian financial community into the wider international dialogue.
The meeting addressed issues related to Swift corporate governance, cooperation among national groups, international standards, operational resilience, security and the continued involvement of national communities in shaping decisions that matter for Swift users.
Cooperation with Niklas Lemberg and other ESA representatives is of particular importance for the Ukrainian Swift community. Through this cooperation, countries with smaller Swift traffic volumes can coordinate their views, raise relevant issues and contribute to strategic discussions within the international cooperative.
A symbolic background to the meeting was the Sun Voyager monument in Reykjavík, created by Icelandic artist Jón Gunnar Árnason. Although often perceived as a ship, its meaning is broader: it is a “dream boat”, an ode to the sun, and a symbol of hope, progress, freedom and the discovery of new horizons.
These meanings are especially relevant for Ukraine. The Ukrainian financial community should not only use international financial infrastructure, but also strengthen its agency in shaping its future. UkrSwift’s participation in ESA is part of a broader effort to represent the interests of Ukrainian banks, support international financial standards, develop secure financial infrastructure and prepare for the renewal of UkrSwift’s own corporate governance.
UkrSwift will continue to strengthen the involvement of Ukrainian Swift members and users in international dialogue, ESA activities, Technical Committee 199, and working groups on compliance, financial monitoring, cybersecurity and international standards.
Ukraine must be not only a user of global financial infrastructure, but also an active participant in its development.
