World Standards Day 2026: International Standards as the Foundation of Financial Interoperability and Trust

14 October 2026 | UkrSwift
Every year on 14 October, the international community celebrates World Standards Day, recognizing the contributions of thousands of experts who develop international standards to ensure technological interoperability, reliable processes, and trust across the global economy.
For the Ukrainian financial community, international standardization is particularly important. It provides a common language for financial institutions, supports Ukraine’s integration into the global financial infrastructure, and creates the foundation for transparency, security, and effective risk management.
From International Standards to Financial Infrastructure
The origins of World Standards Day date back to 14 October 1946, when delegates from 25 countries met in London and agreed to establish a new international standardization organization. This initiative led to the creation of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Today, World Standards Day is celebrated jointly by three leading international organizations: ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
In financial services, international standards have direct practical applications:
ISO 20022 — a universal methodology and framework for financial messaging.
ISO 9362 — identification of financial and other institutions through Business Identifier Codes (BIC).
ISO 17442 — identification of legal entities through Legal Entity Identifiers (LEI).
ISO 3166 — standardized country and territory codes.
SO 4217 — international currency codes.
These standards enable financial institutions to exchange structured data, identify transaction participants unambiguously, automate message processing, and improve financial data quality.
Ukraine as a Participant in International Standardization
The Ukrainian financial community contributes to the development and practical implementation of international standards through UkrSwift and Technical Committee for Standardization TC 199 “Financial Services”, which operates within the field of competence of ISO/TC 68, the international technical committee responsible for financial services standardization.
An important role in this work is played by the Ukrainian Market Practice Groups:
UPMPG (Ukrainian Payments Market Practice Group) — developing market practices for payments.
USMPG (Ukrainian Securities Market Practice Group) — developing market practices for securities.
Current priorities include ISO 20022 implementation, structured postal addresses, improved identification of financial transaction participants, the use of LEIs, and higher data quality for compliance and sanctions risk management.
Another important initiative is the development of Ukrainian transliteration rules for international financial data exchange, including the UkrSwift Transliteration Standard 2.1.
These initiatives demonstrate how international standards and national market practices can complement each other to address specific challenges faced by financial institutions.

Standardization as an Instrument of Financial Resilience
During the ongoing war against Ukraine, the accuracy of financial information, reliable identification of transaction participants, and the ability to distinguish between different legal and territorial circumstances are particularly important.
Structured data and harmonized market practices help financial institutions meet regulatory requirements, implement sanctions restrictions, assess risks, and maintain the continuity of international financial operations.
International standards establish a common foundation. National market practices enable their effective application within a country’s specific legal and economic environment.
Participation by Ukrainian experts in international standardization is therefore an important element in strengthening the country’s financial infrastructure and its integration into the global financial system.

Working Together for the Future
UkrSwift expresses its appreciation to Ukrainian experts, financial institutions, and participants in TC 199, UPMPG, and USMPG who contribute to the development, adaptation, and implementation of international standards.
World Standards Day reminds us that the future of financial services depends not only on technology but also on the ability of professional communities to establish common rules, ensure data quality, and build trust.
The Ukrainian financial community should not merely adopt international standards — it should actively contribute to shaping their future.
